Evaluation of my media magazine by Josh

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents particular social groups by the language and style I have used, for example, the text I have used is informal and is particularly aimed at my target audience of 20 to 25 year olds, such as using explanation points and quotation marks which my readers can relate to and understand. I also used the images in my magazine to represent social groups, for example, on my front cover I used a male model to represent the social group of gender. I used a male model mainly to capture the eye of my female target audience, as they like male artists to appeal to them. Stereotypically they will be looking for a good looking model who makes them want to buy the magazine as they look good and think he is attractive. Also with my images, i dressed the models in trending clothes, this way they appeal to fashionable, chart listeners, who are always on the move and are looking for the next big thing. I tried interpreting different shot types and angles when it came to my images, also with the way i positioned my model. For example i used a low angle shot for my front cover, as i wanted my model to look quite sophisticated and important, but also i positioned my model to make him look casual by making him slouch against the lamppost. Within this image i tried to convey a message to my audience, showing that young people can indeed make it. This is why my model is standing in a street, as this is stereotypically where teenagers hang out with their friends not caring about the world and causing trouble, so therefore i put my model in the street with his guitar to show this is where he came from and to show he had made it.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A media institution that may distribute my magazine is Bauer media, as they are a big media company, which distribute hundreds of different magazines such as Q, Kerrang and FHM. They are well known throughout the world for their distribution quality, this is why i believe they will be a good choice. I am certain that they will be willing to distribute my magazine as i notice Bauer media have a gap in the media market. Although they distribute several music magazines, they don't have a music magazine focused at a female audience of 20 years and above, i found this quite different compared to other large media corporations, therefore i jumped at this gap in the market as it would bring a wider audience which Bauer media are missing.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
How did you attract/address your audience?

Target Audience
My target audience for my magazine was focused on 20 to 25 year olds and possibly higher. I came to this decision for many reasons; the main reason would be the gap in the market for this age group especially for females.
Therefore my music magazine was focused on the popular genre pop, which I believed suited my target audience, I was aiming for the 20 to 25 mark, as these people will be mature adults and know extensively what music information they would want in a magazine, for example what artists they’d like to hear about. To find out more about my target audience I generated a questionnaire which suited both males and females. Doing this allowed me to get an insight into what the target audience wanted.

From these results I was able to establish a magazine that would appeal to my target audience, for example what style of music they liked. Also the style of language they wanted within the magazine. As for my house style I used the colour scheme and masthead that the audience preferred. All this will appeal to my audience and will make them buy it. We attracted the audience by using a specific colour scheme which the audience picked I the questionnaire, we gave the audience what they wanted in a music magazine to make sure they would buy this magazine and not a rival music magazine. Also we attracted the audience by making it a female friendly magazine, as there was a gap in the market for a female music magazine for our chosen age. Therefore we aimed the magazine to appeal and attract them, by using certain images, text styles also by using popular social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the creation of my music magazine, i have used and learnt a great deal about technologies and without them my media product wouldn't be the quality it is now. During the process i used a Digital camera, apple iMacs, Internet explorer\Safari, Adobe photoshop and a blogging website. The digital camera i used help me take high quality photos for my magazine and as it was a digital camera, I was able to see the pictures immediately after i had taken them. Also with the large amount of space on the camera i was able to take vast amounts of photos, giving me the chance to add variety to the images, having them stored on a memory card meant i could switch them onto an Apple iMac to see them larger and to test them with my magazine. The Apple iMac itself helped me store the photos and all the documents related to my music magazine, such as the front cover, contents page and double page spread. Using the Apple iMac i was able to use Internet explorer which is called Safari, this helped me look at other media products and industries to give me a rush of ideas for my own product, for example i was able to look at the Bauer media website to see which magazines they distribute, also i was able to look at examples of Q magazine to see how they used a specific layout for there magazine, this helped me create my magazine. As for Adobe photoshop, this helped me edit any photos I wanted to use for my magazine pages, the tools i used such as the clone tool and the red eye tool, these helped make the photos suitable to be used on my magazine, for example on my front cover, I was able to edit the photo to make it brighter and to also make the trees in the background look bigger and to also cover up the lamppost on the photo as it took the focus off my model. Finally i used a blogging website to put all my information on, this helped me look back over the work i had done, making it easier to use pervious information I had gathered, such as the target audience survey, I could look back and see which colour scheme or name was preferred and then used this for my Front cover, Contents page and Double page spread. So overall technology helped me to make my magazine high quality, oterwise the end result wouldn't of been as good.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task, i feel i have learnt vast amounts about the media industry. I have learnt how large the industry is and that there are only small gaps in the market for certain magazines. The market is quite like a battleground, making it hard to find what the readers actually want, such as the colour scheme. I believe i have progressed in quality and also have learnt what it takes to make a music magazine.

Evaluation of my music magazine by Beth

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As my magazine is mainly for an older more mature audience and is similar to Q magazine i feel that Bauer Media would be the best institution to publish my magazine this is manly because they have over eighty influential media brands world wide and i feel that there is a gap in the market for my music magazine as it is unusual compared to all of the music magazines out there in the market at the moment.  As Bauer media also are well known for producing lots of music magazines such as Q and Kerrang and mainly focus their target audience at adults and teenagers which i chose to focus my magazine on aswell the only difference being that their music magazines are mainly for males whereas i have decided to make my target audience for the same age group but make mine for females this is the main gap in the music market and i feel i have achieved what i set out to do. They have nothing else like my magazine as it is new and up to date and changes frequently. This allows the reader to see a full variety of up and coming and well known artists. I also feel that IPC media would be able to distribute my magazine as they offer a wide variety of music magazines to the industry.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Who – aged 21 to 30 women mainly but there is some male appeal. Middle class, working in offices/ careers/ university graduates.

Music genre – top 40 mixture of music that’s out there now.
We asked our target audience which music genre they were most interested in. Our results went as follows, pop- 10, rock- 3, dubstep- 3, classical- 0 and metal- 3. This gave us an indication showing us that pop was well liked by our target audience but as other genres were liked too we decided to make our magazine a mix of all genres with a UK top 40 theme.

Improving on Q as Q is very masculine.

Appeal to TA – images/ storylines/ dps

Survey :

“We produced a short 5-question survey to figure out what our audience wanted in the music magazine market. We handed it out to 18 people in our target audience (aged 20-30).” In retrospect we needed more questions and should have asked about storylines and features in more detail.

Out Ta research led to the selection of our masthead  :

“The second question that we asked our target audience was which colour scheme really appealed to them, they answered with Cream, gold and White, this suited us as these colours are for a mature audience, and will allow the reader to feel as though they are reading an adult magazine made for them rather than a glorified children’s magazine.” We made the choice to change this slightly and used red, white and gold rather than cream. I think this worked well as it made all the text stand out and it looked sophisticated.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The first thing I  have learnt since my preliminary task and probably the main thing is  the techniques used in Photoshop. I used the magic want tool; magnetic select tool; invert selection; crop; change saturation; layers; and finally the clone tool. I considered tweaking the model with liquify, however I decided on saving this technique for the music magazine cover instead.  Unfortunately, I didn’t learn any this on the course either, as, I have known how to use photoshop and other similar photo editing software for years, having had it on my computer at home. I have also learnt a range of photography techniques, I have learned about such techniques as the rule of thirds, keeping it level, keeping the photo sharp, and making sure the lighting isn’t intrusive or going to ruin my picture. I have also learned about making sure the background of photos isn’t cluttered and that there shouldn’t be anything in the shot that doesn’t need to be there or that will distract the viewer from my model. I have also learnt smaller things such as how to use blogger and its rich text editing tool.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Whilst completing this course i have used a lot of different technologies including using a DSLR camera i found this particularly challenging to be able to get all of my shots in focus and to fit them in with the rule of thirds. i have also use a compact camera for some of my shots i chose for my contents page that did bot need to be as high resolution, whilst learning different technologies i have used many different techniques such as getting depth of field and aperture within my pictures and making sure i have the right ISO and shutter speed to allow the best quality for my images.  I then learnt how to use iMac's which was something i had never used before and the different programmes they have on them for example photoshop and many others. I found photoshop particularly challenging to lear as i have never used it before and the amount of technology that is available within one programme was overwhelming to start with but it then became easier to understand and i was able to use it quickly and easily. From my experience on my AS course by using cropping and levels etc i now feel confident that i could edit picture o a good quality.  I have also displayed my photos in a number of ways such as on Flickr, Facebook and Twitter so i could get feedback from other people.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents social group in a very unique stereotypical way, this is mainly because we decided the focus for our magazine would be at mainly women but we also made the colour scheme fit for both sexes. the only difference i see in my magazine that would determine it for social groups is that it is a very mainstream magazine that although it would be suitable for anyone to read would be for a person who is interested what is out in the music industry right now and what they will be hearing on the radio with little parts of what will be coming soon, this makes me think that the person to buy my magazine would be someone who likes to fit in and be in the know rather than someone who is interested in just one genre of music would have to enjoy lots of different artists an music genres. I allowed a few members of my target audience to see my magazine and they all felt it was very appropriate to what they wanted from a music magazine and that they would be able read it in their own time and enjoy it which is what i was trying to achieve.

Fresh.New.Ready.

Up and coming girl group Topix are set to top the charts this Autumn with their new single 'Forever Yours'. Singer songwriter Alice Hotchin started the girl group just two years ago on a mission to get her name known world wide and has got off to a good start.

Alice Hotchin, aged 20 from Sheffield along with her friends and fellow band members Emily Ward, aged 20 and Rebecca Jackson, aged 21 have revealed to In.Tune how their career has started with a boom in an exclusive interview.
As Alice's solo career didn't get her as well known as she hoped she set her sights higher and began her search for two other singer songwriters in 2010 to form her perfect idea of a girl group which she would call Topix. As she was so young when looking for band members Alice was unsure if her plan would work out like she hoped it would.
“Nothing like this had ever happened in my village before” She told us.
Alice allowed herself to think positive and at the young age of 18 held auditions at her local village hall advertising on Facebook, Twitter and posters around her village asking for 'young, female, pop style singers' and much to her surprise 17 females turned up (Some soloists and some groups).
Alice told us “I was very nervous and unsure what to expect. I wanted a certain look for my band and had never seen or met any of the girls that turned up before this crucial moment!”
She went on to explain how although all the girls that auditioned were very talented there was something special about Rebecca and Emily; they stood out from the other girls that auditioned. “The way they dressed and the personalities they put across were very similar to mine and as soon as they started to sing I knew we would make beautiful harmonies and now after two years, we are ready to top the charts!”.
Rebecca and Emily both have friends since early childhood and are both from Liverpool, they saw the advertisements on Facebook fancied their chances and travelled to Sheffield to try out for the band blissfully unaware of what was to come in the next two years of their lives, but hoping for a new adventure with new friendships and new challenges.
Rebecca told me how she had left school and went straight into full time work at her local Tesco supermarket but knew that was not what she was born to do
“ I was unhappy in what I did but, finding Alice and being part of this band has made me the happiest I have ever been and I am so pleased she has given me this opportunity!”.
Emily on the other hand had finished college and was in part time work with her local theatre company, this is what she had thought was the career for her and she explained how she was
“over the moon with excitement to be part of something bigger, People can now appreciate what I do on a larger scale”.
We then chatted about how they plan to make their music different to all other typical pop music that is around.
Alice said “We plan to make our pop music for a more mature audience allowing people of all ages to enjoy what we do.”
Emily added “Girls Aloud and Spice Girls are our idols!”.
I then asked the girls what they thought of their new lives, being famous and and how they would tackle male attention. Emily said “Every girl loves male attention and right now we have more than ever, safe to say I am loving my new life” (They all laughed) Alice said “We want to be known for our music, our personal lives will get more exciting but for now we plan to make our debut and head for the stars! We are a girl band that is fresh, new and ready to take on the charts. WE ARE READY TO TOP THE CHARTS!” “Bring it on” Said Rebecca.
All the way through the interview the girls chatted as though they had all known each other years and had strong ideas of how their music was going to affect a more mature audience even though pop is typically for a younger audience. From In.Tune we wished the girls the best of luck and are looking forward to hearing their new single.
